Anaerobic digestion platform in the Hauts-de-France region

Year: 2026

Site: Anaerobic digestion platform in the Hauts-de-France region

The site includes an anaerobic digester that processes approximately 28 tons per year of organic waste, including seized goods and unsold goods.

An exceptional operation to empty the digester (volume: 3,000 m³) is carried out over a period of four months, generating an odor problem linked to the temporary storage of digestate.

Context and odor issues

Emptying the digester involves storing digestate on two separate platforms, which are likely to emit strong and persistent odors.

The main challenges are:

  • Limiting odor nuisance for nearby residents
  • Maintaining good community relations
  • Controlling the site’s environmental impact
  • Ensuring operational acceptability during the clean-out process

Odor treatment solution implemented

The treatment is based on passive air treatment deodorization, using odor-neutralizing gel plates installed on peripheral supports.

This solution aims to create an odor barrier between the storage areas and surrounding homes.

Technical description of the installation

The installation includes:

  • 144 linear meters of IDRAGEL ramps around the large platform
  • 26 linear meters of IDRAGEL ramps around the small platform
  • Installation of supports with gel plates every 3 meters on wooden posts
  • Peripheral treatment of the two digestate storage areas

This configuration allows for even diffusion of the neutralizer and the creation of an effective odor barrier.

Operating principle

The system works by continuously diffusing an odor neutralizer, which:

  • Captures and neutralizes odor compounds
  • Reduces the spread of odors outside the site
  • Creates an odor buffer zone around the platforms

Benefits of the solution

  • Significant reduction in odor nuisance for the neighborhood
  • Quick installation and suitable for temporary operations
  • Passive solution, no energy consumption
  • Modular device that can be easily dismantled at the end of the operation
  • Improved site acceptability during digester emptying
